Thanksgiving, July 4th and Halloween are all days that are celebrated in the United States. These colonial costumes can be worn for any one of these events and worn with pride.  The United States began as colonies of England, France, Spain and the Netherlands. The story really began with the colonization of the East Coast.  European nations sailed to America not only to broaden their influence in the world but also to increase their wealth. It was the English who eventually established their dominance and the first colony was founded at Jamestown, Virginia in 1607.

It was not only people seeking to increase their wealth and power that came to America. Many people came to the New World because they were fleeing religious persecution. The pilgrims, founders of Plymouth, Massachusettes, arrived in 1620 onboard the Mayflower looking for religious freedom. They started colonies in both Virginia and Plymouth both of which flourished with some assistance from the Native Americans.

The Mayflower certainly has a famous place in American history as a symbol of early European colonization. Because of religious oppression in England, the small group of puritan separatists desired a life where they could practice their religious beliefs without fear of persecution. The Mayflower has become a symbol of religious freedom in the United States and this story is in every American history book.

The Thanksgiving Day celebration, held on the third Thursday in November, gives thanks to the almighty for helping the pilgrims survive the brutal war. It has been an annual traditional since 1863.

The other great American celebration is Independence Day. This commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776 declaring independence from Great Britain. It is usually marked by a patriotic display of fireworks, speeches, carnivals and parades.

The founding fathers of America who signed the Declaration of Independence included the great Benjamin Franklin, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Dressing in a colonial boy costume is a great way to honor their memories at any celebration.
